Authorities say the shooting happened Friday in the mountain community of Twin Peaks. Brant Bater, 61, told investigators he was trying to shoot an aggressive dog when he accidentally shot and killed his wife Faith.
Initially, the shooting was ruled an accident, but detectives now say Bater's wife was the intended target. She was shot in the head.
He's being held without bail. Detectives say they plan to recommend murder charges after uncovering additional evidence.
