Meredith Baxter is opening up about some troubles she faced in her marriage with actor David Birney.
The 63-year-old actress claims in her new memoir, "Untied: A Memoir of Family, Fame and Floundering," that Birney hit her on more than one occasion.
"It was so sudden and unexpected, I couldn't tell you which hand hit me, or even how hard. I do recall thinking, 'I'd better not get up because he's going to hit me again,'" Baxter wrote in her memoir according to People magazine.
Birney and Baxter were initially co-stars on the 1972 sitcom "Bridget Loves Bernie." The show ran for one season. Birney and Baxter were married in 1974 and had three children before being divorced in 1989. The actress came out as a lesbian in 2009.
Baxter is probably is best known for playing Elyse Keaton on the 80s sitcom "Family Ties" with Michael J. Fox. Over the years tha actress has also battled alcoholism and breast cancer.
According to the "Today Show," where Baxter appeared to promoted her book on Tuesday, Birney has denied the allegations.
The actress also opened up about her relationship with her mother, actress Whitney Blake and says her mother would not allow Baxter to call her "mom" and that Blake never kept pictures of Baxter.
"It wasn't her intent but didn't know it at the time. What came from my childhood, which crystallized as I was writing the book, was understanding that I had a deep sense of feeling -- in fact, I had no value, that I was unloved and unlovable," the actress said. "That was the belief system I developed which really became the engine that dictated everything. Every job, every decision, every relationship.
She also revealed that she's still in a relationship with her girlfriend Nancy, a general contractor, who Baxter revealed she had been dating for four years when she came out in 2009.
