Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is challenging a plan to increase retiree benefits for police and firefighters.

He is calling on the Board of Fire and Police Pension Commissioners to reject a $4.8 million proposal that boosts the retiree health subsidy by 7 percent.

The mayor said it is irresponsible to increase these benefits when the city is laying off and furloughing workers.

He said increased pension costs already account for $170 million of the city's $350 million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year.
