Christina Aguilera has signed on as coach on the new competition reality show "The Voice."
The show, set to air on NBC on April 26, is the brain child of "Survivor" and "Apprentice" producer Mark Burnett. It is based off "The Voice of Holland", a top-rated reality show in the Netherlands. "The Voice of Holland" is the most watched talent show in Dutch TV history, outpacing both Dutch versions of "Idol" and "X Factor."
Aguilera will be joined at the coaches' table by Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine and "Forget You" singer Cee Lo Green.
"Christina has a once in a generation talent -- her voice is phenomenally distinctive and instantly recognizable," Paul Telegdy, executive vice president of alternative programming at NBC and Universal Media Studios said in a statement. "Her journey as an artist, who started so young in the music business, will be an inspiration to the talent she coaches on the show."
"I am so excited to be part of such a wonderful project that celebrates music and the talent behind it," Aguilera said in the statement. "To be given the opportunity to help shape new artists' careers and mentor them to see their dreams come to fruition is a task I welcome with open arms."
The format of "The Voice" will be different from other reality competition shows by having a team of four celebrity coaches. During the audition process, the coaches are blind folded and are forced to choose contestants to mentor based off the singer's vocal performance. If the celebrity likes what they hear, they choose the contestant by pressing a button. If two coaches choose a contestant, the singer gets to choose who they would want to be coached by.
In the following round, the coaches form teams and contestants face off their own team members and the celebrity coaches pick a winner for the finals. After the final teams are set, live performance rounds begin and viewers at home choose who to send home each week. The winner will receive a recording contract and $100,000.
Aguilera's announcement comes just a day after the singer was detained for Aguilera, 30, was detained on Tuesday for public intoxication after her boyfriend Matthew Rutler, 25, was arrested and charged on Tuesday for driving under the influence of alcohol in Los Angeles.
Aguilera was not charged. Police said she "didn't really understand where she was in many regards. She said she didn't drive, so she didn't even know where she lived."
Rock singer Pink "recently poked fun at Christina Aguilera by writing on her Twitter page, "Out of Myself, Britney, and Christina- didn't everyone think I was gonna be the troublemaker?" Pink said on her Twitter page. "LOOK MA!!! No CUFFS!!!"
"The Voice" premieres on April 26 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
