UC Berkeley student protest ends peacefully

BERKELEY, Calif.

Eight demonstrators spent hours occupying the fourth-story ledge of a campus building. They came down following talks with campus leaders and were greeted with hugs and cheers from the crowd below.

The group was cited for trespassing and then released.

The peaceful ending came after riot police faced off earlier in the day with a growing number of angry demonstrators. UC Berkeley police Lt. Alex Yao estimated there were about 200 demonstrators.

A ninth protester was arrested earlier in the day.

University officials said 26 classes were canceled, impacting more than 1,000 students.
