OC teacher sentenced 16 months for having sex with student

SANTA ANA, Calif.

Carlie Attebury, 31, was a band director at El Modena high school in Orange. Between November 2007 and September 2008, Attebury had sex with the male student at her home in Orange and exchanged hundreds of text messages with the victim, many of which were sexually explicit.

Prosecutors said Attebury gained the trust of the victim and his family by befriending them, including having dinner at their home.

The principal at El Modena High School contacted police in October 2008 after witnesses saw Attebury sitting behind the male student in the bleachers at a school event with her legs straddled around him and caressing his hair in view of parents and other students.

Also during the affair, Attebury went to the Orange Police Department to report that she was the victim of an extortion attempted by a former student, Miguel Lopez. Lopez contacted Attebury and said he would report a prior sexual relationship that the she had with a former 18-year-old student and the 15-year-old student if she did not pay him $3,500 and send him sexually explicit photos of herself. Lopez pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years of probation.

Along with Attebury's sentence, a judge ordered her to stay away from the teen and register as a sex offender.
