A couple from Hawthorne has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and animal neglect.

Gregory and Janice Bartmess, both 60 years old, were arrested on Saturday.

Their arrests came after Hawthorne police went to a home on a tip and found 13 dogs, all in varying states of neglect. Officers found rotting food out in the open and animal feces on the floors.

After rounding up the dogs, they discovered Janice Bartmess' 86-year-old mother, bed-ridden, unresponsive and living in what officers described as filthy and unsanitary conditions.

The elderly woman was taken to a local hospital and the dogs were placed with animal control while the investigation continues.
