The driver was ejected and died at the scene. The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. It all started out with a pursuit in Long Beach.
Long Beach police officers were chasing the driver, but according to the California Highway Patrol, police backed off because of the high rate of speed and weather conditions. It was slick on the freeway because of light rain.
Officials said the suspect was driving erratically and when they tried to pull him over on surface streets, he wouldn't pull over.
A short time later, authorities called off the pursuit when the suspect jumped on the northbound 710 Freeway. It was minutes after the pursuit was called off that the driver crashed.
Lanes were shut down temporarily as authorities investigated the incident.
