High winds howl across Southern California

SOUTH LOS ANGELES

The gusty conditions proved to be destructive.

One car owner in the 200 block of West 67th Street in South Los Angeles said he heard strong winds, a loud boom and then a crash.

He found a large tree trunk had fallen on his recently restored 1981 Cadillac Coupe de Ville.

There were also wind-whipped dust storms gusting throughout the high desert throughout the day.

Some residents from Rosamond said the gusts were so fierce, they stayed indoors for the day.

Sandie Via says she would have done just that if she had not needed to drive to Lancaster to get medication.

Via says in Lancaster it was more of the same strong wind.

"I came from Rosamond out here, so I had to be really careful about driving along the freeway and watching where I was going, wiggling around all over the place," she said. "I encountered some high winds."

Dave Chapman said he drove into the Antelope Valley from San Francisco on Monday afternoon.

He says he was not expecting to have to battle a whipping wind while on the road.

"Coming over the Grapevine, it was pretty bad," Chapman said.
