CA appeals court gives OK for LAUSD layoffs

March 8, 2011 12:00:00 AM PST
A state appeals court ruled that layoffs of teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District can go forward.

The court refused to delay a settlement that would protect 45 of the lowest performing schools from layoffs.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California said the ruling is a victory for students at problem schools which usually have a high turnover of teachers.

The teachers union said the ruling means that other schools will feel more impact from layoffs. The union may seek a stay from the Supreme Court.
