Country music star Blake Shelton has been named as coach/judge on the upcoming competition reality show "The Voice" on NBC.

"We couldn't have a panel that represented the hottest American music without a strong country presence, and Blake is at the top of his game right now," said Paul Telegdy, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, NBC and Universal Media Studios, in a statement.

Telegdy adds, "Not only is he incredibly charismatic, but his passion for collaborating with and bringing the best out of other talented artists makes him the perfect choice to round out this 'Dream Team' of musician coaches."

Shelton confirmed on his official Twitter page, saying, "Breaking news! I'm joining @ceelogreen, @adamlevine and Christina Aguilera as a coach on @NBCTheVoice!"

"I'm not sure 'The Voice' knows what they signed on for by bringing me on the show," Shelton said in the network's statement. "I know this for sure; Christina, Cee Lo, Adam and I are going to have a blast and I am extremely excited to be part of a show that recognizes true vocal talent."

The "Hillbilly Bone" singer was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the 44th Annual Country Music Awards in December. The 34-year-old singer is engaged to fellow country music star Miranda Lambert. Shelton and Lambert, 27, began dating in 2006 and became engaged in May. Their wedding is set for the spring of 2011.

The show, set to air on NBC on April 26, is the brain child of "Survivor" and "Apprentice" producer Mark Burnett. It is based off "The Voice of Holland", a top-rated reality show in the Netherlands. "The Voice of Holland" is the most watched talent show in Dutch TV history, outpacing both Dutch versions of "Idol" and "X Factor."

Shelton will be joined by fellow coaches Christina Aguilera, Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine and "Forget You" singer Cee Lo Green.

The format of "The Voice" will be different from other reality competition shows by having a team of four celebrity coaches. During the audition process, the coaches are blind folded and are forced to choose contestants to mentor based off the singer's vocal performance. If the celebrity likes what they hear, they choose the contestant by pressing a button. If two coaches choose a contestant, the singer gets to choose who they would want to be coached by.

In the following round, the coaches form teams and contestants face off their own team members and the celebrity coaches pick a winner for the finals. After the final teams are set, live performance rounds begin and viewers at home choose who to send home each week. The winner will receive a recording contract and $100,000.

"The Voice" premieres on April 26 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
