Las Vegas man arrested for 1985 Long Beach murder

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Joel Spicer, 59, will be charged with the murder of Joanne Jones, who disappeared in April 1985 after leaving her boyfriend's home in Long Beach.

The 23-year-old's body was found in Azusa Canyon. Police said her car had been parked on the corner of 1st Street and Cherry Avenue in Long Beach, but it was missing.

Police arrested Spicer at the time after he was spotted driving Jones' car, but didn't have enough evidence to hold him.

In 2009, a sheriff's detective reopened the case and found new information, including new DNA evidence, which brought police back to Spicer. He was arrested on Tuesday without incident. He's being held in Nevada until he can be extradited to California.

Anyone who may have information about the case is urged to call the L.A. County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
