"My heart just goes out to him, and all of his family," Preston told People magazine. "He's such a good person underneath all of it, he really is."
According to reports at the time of the accident, Preston picked up a pair of Sheen's pants from the bathroom floor and a loaded .22 calibur handgun in the pocket discharged and shot shrapnel into her arm and ankle.
A year after she broke of her engagement to Sheen, Preston, 48, married John Travolta. Preston currently lives with Travolta, their daughter Ella Blue, 10, and their one month old son Benjamin.
"We were together for a year, and he wasn't drinking, and he wasn't doing drugs," Preston continued. "And there's a beautiful person in there. He really is a great man."
When Sheen was asked about the gun incident on "The Howard Stern Show" earlier in the month, he clarified the story.
"She lifted a pair of my pants off the scale one day in the bathroom when she was alone," Sheen told Stern. "A tiny little revolver fell out of my pocket, hit the floor, shot through the toilet and it got her leg. It was the dumbest thing I've ever done even though I wasn't in the room. That's when I decided it was probably not a good idea to have [guns] around."
Preston, who's starred in movies like "Jerry McGuire" and "Twins," recently credited her "Casino Jack" co-star Kevin Spacey for helping her get through the death of her oldest son, Jett, who died suddenly in January 2009.
