Thousands of California teachers will get layoff notices on Tuesday because it's the state deadline to hand out or mail pink slips.

More than 7,000 pink slips have been given to teachers and other staffers in the L.A. Unified School District alone.

A $400 million budget deficit and the loss of federal stimulus money are the main reasons for the cuts.

Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed a tax extension plan to help prevent a $6 billion hit to school funding. The proposal could be on the ballot as early as June. However, many GOP leaders oppose the plan.
