Long Beach officer shoots woman stabbing man

LONG BEACH, Calif.

Detectives said just before 3 p.m. Thursday an officer was dispatched to the scene of a screaming woman stabbing a man with a sharp object on the 3100 block of Pine Avenue.

Investigators say the officer asked the woman repeatedly to drop the sharp object, but the woman refused. Police say the officer decided to initially use less-than-lethal force to get her to comply. When Tasing her didn't work, they say, the officer had to shoot the woman.

"The Taser had no effect on her and she continued to use the sharp object to stab the male individual, and it was at that point that the officer felt that he needed to save that individual's life, and he fired his weapon," said Long Beach Police Deputy Chief Robert Luna.

Both the woman and the man were taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Police said the couple may have been fighting over their two children, who were not hurt.

"Very alarming," said neighbor Kiyan Thompson. "Most of the time it's mostly quiet over here. The only time I hear anything going on is when people are doing doughnuts over here in the middle of the street right here, but other than that it's pretty quiet."

The incident was under investigation.
