OTRC: Matthew McConaughey almost went to law school instead of film school

Matthew McConaughey talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com and other news outlets in a satelite interview for 'Lincoln Lawyer.' (Lionsgate)

Matthew McConaughey almost went to law school instead of film school, which might have lead the actor to a similar existence to his most recent character.

"I was headed for law school," McConaughey told OnTheRedCarpet.com and other news outlets in a satellite interview. "I thought I was going to be doing exactly what, or a version of what Mick Haller does in this. I was gonna go study criminal defense. I had a change of heart, went to film school and now I get to play a lawyer for six months or so and then I retire and go do something else for awhile and return to law."

In "The Lincoln Lawyer," set for release on Friday, March 18, McConaughey plays attorney Mick Haller, who conducts his business from the back of his Lincoln town car while working on high-profile cases.

McConaughey has played an attorney in the past. One of his breakout roles was portraying attorney Jake Brigance in the 1996 film, "A Time to Kill," based on the John Grisham novel.

McConaughey said that though he had read the script about four years ago, it wasn't until he took some time away from acting that he felt ready to tackle the "meaty" role.

"Well I had taken a couple of years off to start a family and so when I was ready to work again, this came back around to me," McConaghey said in the interview. "When I read it, I thought this is exactly where I wanted to be, those are the shoes I want to be in and it turned me on, in many ways. And it is my first dramatic role since 'We Are Marshall' and I like putting on those lawyer shoes as well."

When asked about how the actor unwinds after dealing with such an intense dramatic role, the famously laid-back actor admit that he slept "really well" after spending himself mentally and psysically at work.

"The Lincoln Lawyer" also stars William H Macy, Marisa Tomei and Ryan Phillippe.

At the film's Hollywood premiere, McConaughey was joined on the red carpet by his partner and the mother of two children Camila Alves. Alves said that she would definitely hire her man as a lawyer, despite the fact that his character works out of his car. Alves and McConaughey have two children, 2 year old Levi and Vida who is 14 months old.

"Camilla and I are very happy that we have two healthy, healthy children and that's not always a given," McConaughey said in the interview. "And they're doing great, inside and out."

McConaughey currently has seven movies in production, including "Bernie," which is about a moritcian who befriends a wealthy widow, murders her and then creates the illusion that she's still alive. The film co-stars Shirtley MacLaine and Jack Black and is slated for release later this year.
