Jennifer Lawrence is indeed the right actress to play Katniss Everdeen in a film adaptation of the novel "The Hunger Games," its author Suzanne Collins says.
The movie studio Lionsgate confirmed last week that Lawrence, 20, would play the young heroine, who volunteers to take her little sister's place in a forced fight-to-the-death live televised event. "The Hunger Games" the movie is set to hit theaters on March 23, 2012.
"We have found Katniss," Collins said in a statement carried by Entertainment Weekly. "After watching dozens of auditions by a group of very fine young actresses, I felt there was only one who truly captured the character I wrote in the book. And I'm thrilled to say that Jennifer Lawrence has accepted the role."
Collins said in a press release put out by Lionsgate that Lawrence is "just an incredible actress. So powerful, vulnerable, beautiful, unforgiving and brave. I never thought we'd find somebody this amazing for the role. And I can't wait for everyone to see her play it."
Lawrence recently earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2010 movie "Winter's Bone." She stars alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in the film "The Beaver," which comes out on May 20.
Lawrence also plays Mystique in the new "X-Men" movie reboot, "X-Men: First Class," which hits theaters on June 3.
