Former Beverly Hills mayor sentenced in animal cruelty case

FONTANA, Calif.

Charlotte Spadaro, 69, was convicted of keeping 180 dogs and cats in unsanitary conditions at a one-acre Rialto home she used as a rescue shelter from 2004 to 2005.

Rialto police and animal control officials were led to the property after a neighbor reported a strong odor.

The horde of animals, some of them dead, was seized by authorities. The property was allegedly littered with feces.

The raid touched off a six-year-long animal cruelty case against Spadaro.

She was found guilty last month on charges stemming from the incident, but she says she is innocent.

"No one can point to anything that I actually did that caused suffering to any animal," Spadaro said.

As a real estate attorney, Spadaro chose to represent herself in court.

Her sentencing also forbade her from keeping animals, with the exception of three personal pets.

Riverside County Department of Animal Services has been following the case closely.

The agency says it rescued 25 animals from one of her kennels in 2009. She is facing multiple charges for animal abuse and cruelty in that case as well.

Spadaro says she will appeal her conviction.

"I think they are trying to talk me out of doing good work," she said. "I have adopted out many animals."
