Michael Lohan, actress Lindsay Lohan's father, was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence on Wednesday, March 23, after he was arrested in Los Angeles for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.
If convicted, the 50-year-old faces a maximum sentence of one year in county jail, a Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokesperson said in a statement.
A message posted on Wednesday on a Twitter page believed to be Michael Lohan's said Kate Major, his girlfriend, was a "liar."
On Monday, police received a call about a domestic dispute and arrested Michael Lohan after suspecting that he held his girlfriend against her will and prevented her from calling 911. His bail was set at $200,000. He was later taken to a hospital after complaining of chest pains.
On Wednesday, he was charged with one misdemeanor count of corporal injury to a cohabitant and is accused of physically assaulting his girlfriend after an argument on Monday. She sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment from paramedics, authorities said. Michael Lohan is expected to be arraigned on May 23 in Beverly Hills.
Michael Lohan has battled alcohol addiction and has over the past decade spent more than five non-consecutive years in prison after being charged with driving under the influence, attempted assault of his then-girlfriend, insider trading, and violating his parole. Earlier this month, he began filming episodes for the reality show "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew."
Meantime, Lindsay Lohan is at the center of a felony jewelry theft case. She is accused of stealing a $2,500 necklace from Kamofie & Co., a store located in the Venice area of Los Angeles on Jan. 22, three weeks after she was released from court-ordered rehab. She has already pleaded not guilty to a charge of felony grand theft.
The actress recently rejected a judge's plea deal in the case, which would have sent her back to jail for the fourth time. Her preliminary hearing was set for April 22.
