Newport Beach considers a bookless library

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

The city of Newport Beach is considering closing its Balboa branch and outfitting a community center with everything the library had, except books.

Most people go to the library to use computers and to study. Few take books off the shelves.

Officials believe getting rid of the books and librarians would help /*Newport Beach*/ adapt to modern times and save money while still giving people services they need.

A decision is still at least two years away.
