Ruby the African elephant dies at age 50

The former matriarch of the Los Angeles Zoo's elephant family has died.

Ruby, a 50-year-old African elephant, died Tuesday at San Andreas Sanctuary.

Ruby lived for 20 years at the Los Angeles Zoo.

Animal activists lobbied for years for the zoo to relocate her to the 2,300-acre facility, where she moved in 2007. She lived there with three other elephants.

Ruby was one of the oldest African elephants in captivity.

A necropsy will be performed at the University of California, Davis.
