Archie Comics 1st gay character gets own mini-series

PHILADELPHIA

The character, Kevin Keller, is a friend to Archie, Veronica and others at Riverdale High. The four-issue series expected to come out in June will focus on Kevin's friendships as well as him coming out to his friends and family.

"The world of Riverdale has to reflect contemporary culture and to show it is an accepting, diverse place," said Dan Parent to the Associated Press. Parent is writing and drawing the mini-series. "And that's why Kevin is important. To show that everybody is welcome in this all-American town we've embraced for over 70 years."

Archie Comics has strived to make its fictional world relevant and contemporary to the real world over the decades with Archie getting married as well as teacher Geraldine Grundy passing away from cancer.

"We address his coming out and, while the story may be somewhat serious in tone in places, it's still entertaining and funny, since those are always a staple of a good 'Archie' story," Parent said.
