Actress Kirstie Alley and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy suffered a setback during their "Dancing With The Stars" performance when Chmerkovskiy seemed to lose his balance and both he and Alley fell to the ballroom floor in the beginning of their Rumba.
So what exactly happened? Well, Chmerkovskiy set the record straight to OnTheRedCarpet.com about the slip up. "She [Alley] didn't make a mistake, it was all me. My muscle just gave out and, you know, it's unfortunate but it happens," the veteran dancer said. "It just never happened to me on a performance night."
There have been a few tumbles and injuries on ballroom floor before. In Season five, Marie Osmond fainted after her performance in week five of the competition. Cristián de la Fuente suffered a ruptured tendon in his left biceps muscle during his performance in season six. During season ten Evan Lysacek broke two of his toes in rehearsal and also sustained a concussion after falling on his head while lifting with his partner, Anna Trebunskaya.
Alley says the moment caught her off guard. "I was a deer in headlights because when it happened, it was so unreal. I was like, 'is he being funny?' And then I thought, 'is he hurt?' and then he stood and said, 'let's just keep dancing,'" Alley said.
The two got up and kept performing their Rumba. The judges were kind to the two by complimenting their resilience and gave the pair a 21 out of 30 for their dance.
"It was a test that nobody really wants to go through but once it happens, it's the biggest test you can possibly imagine," Chmerkovskiy said. "That's what the whole live TV is all about and the way she recovered was just amazing."
