Bristol Palin was paid $262,500 in 2009 to advocate against teen pregnancy and talk about sex abstinence, which was part of her work with the Candie's Foundation, newly-released tax documents show.
The 20-year-old daughter of Republican politician Sarah Palin and a "Dancing With The Stars" alum, has been a tabloid favorite ever since her mother's 2008 vice presidential campaign. At the time, Bristol Palin was pregnant with then-fiance Levi Johnston's son Tripp and later gave birth out of wedlock.
She later become a teenage pregnancy prevention advocate and has made personal and on-air appearances on behalf of the Candie's Foundation, whose mission statement is "to educate America's youth about the devastating consequences of teen pregnancy through celebrity PSA campaigns and initiatives." According to the documents, published on the GuideStar website, which monitors the finances of nonprofit groups, Palin was among the group's five highest-paid independent contractors in 2009.
"Ms. Palin was compensated for her work with the foundation, which included appearing in video and print PSAs, two town hall meetings, and numerous media interviews," the Candie's Foundation said in a statement. "She has been a courageous and powerful partner to the foundation as we attempt to discourage teen pregnancy."
"We know that Ms. Palin's work has had a positive effect on teens," it added. "In a recent independent national survey of 1,000 teens that compared a Bristol Palin PSA with those of another national teen pregnancy organization that use non-famous teens, more than twice as many teens (57 percent vs. 27 percent) said Bristol's PSA "got my attention," three times as many (41 percent vs. 11 percent) said it was "powerful," and more than twice as many (38 percent vs. 16 percent) said it was "memorable".
