Chely Wright has gotten engaged to girlfriend Lauren Blitzer, less than a year after she made headlines for coming out of the closet.
The 40-year-old country singer confirmed her engagement on her Facebook page and told People magazine: "The freedom of being out and open about who I am allowed me to find and fall in love with Lauren."
Wright and Blitzer, a gay rights activist, plan to marry in Connecticut on August 20, Wright's spokesperson told the magazine. The wedding will take place in front of 200 people on an estate owned by Blitzer's aunt, E! News said, quoting Wright as saying: "We'll both be wearing white!"
The two met through their youth advocacy work and Wright says they plan on having kids, telling E! News: "The benefit of being out is I get to have everything that everyone else has. I do want a family and I do want traditional things. I just had no idea it would happen so quickly. I feel like it was a blessing from God."
Wright had said in media interviews that she grew up in a community in the South where homosexuality was shunned and that she hid her sexuality for the sake of her music.
Wright released her new album, "Lifted Off the Ground," in May 2010, after she came out. The singer said in January of this year that her country music career has suffered and that her life has been threatened since she came out publicly.
