Avril Lavigne reminisces about her first meeting with ex-husband Deryck Whibley, saying in a recent interview that he gave her a shot of Jagermeister when she was 17.

The 26-year-old singer and Whibley, the 31-year-old frontman of the rock band Sum 41, married in July 2006 in California. They have no children together. Lavigne filed for divorce in October 2009, citing irreconcilable differences. The two Canadian music artists finalized their divorce in November 2010.

"Everyone's always surprised that we're still so close," Lavigne told Rolling Stone magazine. "Like, 'Really?!'"

"I made out with him the first day I met him," Lavigne added. "He gave me my first shot of Jager. I had a tie on - it was back in the days of the tie. I was 17. As I was getting carried out of the bar I saw Chad from Nickelback! Isn't that funny?"

Whibley produced half of Lavigne's fourth studio album, "Goodbye Lullaby," which was released on March 8 and which marked a comeback for the singer, who last released a major record about four years ago.

Lavigne has since moved on from her divorce and has been linked to Los Angeles socialite and reality star Brody Jenner since early this year.

Whibley's band also released a new album last month - "Screaming Bloody Murder." The singer has reportedly said he is happier following his split from Lavigne.

"It was a very painful experience," Whibley told Kerrang! magazine, according to the Toronto Sun. "I don't really want to get into it, but what I'll say about it is that, at the end of the day, it was good."

"What I realized from going through that experience is that people travel along at a certain level of happiness," he was quoted as saying. "Then you go down to a low that you never knew existed. But when you come back up, your happiness levels go higher than ever before. You realize it's made you happier than ever before. The pain raises the bar of happiness further down the line, at least with me anyway."
