The bill leaves it up to local districts to decide what to include in the lessons and in what grade the lessons would be taught.
Supporters hope learning gay history will counter homophobic stereotypes and reduce bullying.
The bill passed Thursday on a 23 to 14 vote. It now goes to the Assembly.
