La Plaza De Cultura y Artes opens in downtown LA

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES

The plaza is located at Main and Republic streets near Olvera Street.

During its constructions, it became a source of controversy after crews dug up a centuries-old cemetery.

In the 1800s, the site was a cemetery for Our Lady Queen of Angels but was thought to have been relocated.

There was concern among the Native American community over possible descendents buried in the cemetery. But in the end, builders said they were given the OK to continue construction.
