Demi Lovato is leaving the series "Sonny With a Chance," a spokesperson for the Disney Channel confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com on Tuesday, April 19, months after the actress and pop singer underwent treatment for "physical and emotional issues."

The 18-year-old has played main character Sonny Munroe since the show began in 2009. Lovato left her tour with the Jonas Brothers in the fall of 2010 and underwent nearly three months of inpatient treatment. She returned to her Los Angeles home in January.

"It made sense for me to go ahead and leave the show to focus on my music," Lovato told People magazine. "It's kind of sad for me that a chapter of my life has ended but there couldn't be a better time for me to move on."

"I don't think going back to Sonny would be healthy for my recovery," she added. "Being in front of a camera would make me nervous."

In mid-April, Lovato revealed that she has struggled with food addiction, cutting and depression and told Seventeen magazine: "I basically had a nervous breakdown."

"Sonny With A Chance" aired its final episode of its second season on January 2. Meanwhile, its other cast members are set to return in June with a revamped show - "So Random!," based on the title of the sketch comedy program that is featured on Lovato's former series.
