Catherine Zeta-Jones has opened up about her battle with bipolar disorder, which had prompted her to check into a mental health hospital to seek treatment.

The 41-year-old Oscar-winning Welsh actress has over the past year dealt with her actor-husband Michael Douglas' battle with throat cancer. The 66-year-old actor, father to their children Dylan and Carys, said in January that he had beaten the disease and that his throat tumor was gone.

"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them," Zeta-Jones told People magazine. "If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help."

Her spokesperson had said on April 13: "After dealing with the stress of the past year, Catherine made the decision to check into a mental health facility for a brief stay to treat her Bipolar II Disorder."

Earlier this month, Zeta-Jones spent several days at the Silver Hill Hospital, a mental-health facility in New Canaan, Connecticut, the magazine said.

People suffering from bipolar II disorder experience both elevated moods, which may lead to increased activity, and episodes of depression. Their "up" periods are less intense than those experienced by those diagnosed with bipolar I disorder. Both types of ailments can be controlled with medications, including antidepressants, and therapy.

Meanwhile, Zeta-Jones is concentrating on her movie career. Her last film, the R-rated independent movie "The Rebound," had a limited release in 2009.

She recently began shooting the sports comedy "Playing The Field" in Shreveport, Louisiana, People said. The movie also stars Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke and Elizabeth Berkley and is set for release in 2012.

Zeta-Jones is also set to star in the comedy movie "Lay the Favorite," which features Bruce Willis and Justin Timberlake and is also set to hit theaters in 2012. On Wednesday, April 20, director Adam Shankman confirmed Zeta-Jones had joined the cast of his musical film "Rock of Ages," which will see her playing an "arch-conservative" villain.
