Woman dies driving off West LA parking structure

WEST LOS ANGELES

Investigators are calling the incident an accident.

Authorities responded to the parking structure for the Sports Club LA on Sepulveda Boulevard and Nebraska Avenue about 9:20 a.m. A Volkswagen SUV had gone through a barrier and landed on its roof outside the structure.

The driver, identified only as a 76-year-old woman, was declared dead at the scene.

Capt. Brenda Crump of the Los Angeles Police Department said a witness saw the driver in the vehicle parked in the space in front of the barrier.

"The witness saw the victim in the vehicle ... the victim was either maneuvering forward or back in the parking space. She looked away and then she heard a loud noise and saw the car go over the side," Crump said. "It didn't have very far to go to hit that wall."

A medical condition may have played a role in the accident, investigators said.

Bill Tompkins, who saw the scene of the accident coming out of the gym, said there was another incident at the parking structure just a few years ago.

"Same thing, but the car didn't go over, it just smashed into it and the piece fell over just like that," Tompkins said.
