Johnny Depp is set to appear in the new "21 Jump Street" film, OnTheRedCarpet.com has learned.
The 47-year-old actor played Officer Tom Hanson on the 1980s cop series, which helped make him famous,. Last year, Depp told MTV News he was "into" the idea of appearing in the movie, which sees Channing Tatum portraying his old role, but that no one had approached him about it.
Depp's spokesperson on Tuesday, April 26, confirmed a report by ComingSoon.net, which said Depp will have a small cameo part in the new film. His role was not revealed.
The "21 Jump Street" film is due for release on March 16, 2012. Aside from Tatum, others set to star in the new movie are Jonah Hill, Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Brie Larson, who will portray the female lead, and Ice Cube, who will play the police captain.
"21 Jump Street" the television show also featured Holly Robinson Peete of the CBS show "The Talk" as well as Peter DeLuise and depicted young officers going undercover, often in high schools. Michael Bendetti was cast in the lead role following Depp's departure before the fifth and final season began in 1991.
Depp has said he hated being contractually bound to "21 Jump Street" the series, but agreed it helped make him a household name. He has since become known for movies such as the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films and Tim Burton flicks such as "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street."
Depp reprises his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth "Pirates" movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," which is set for release on May 20.
