OTRC: Royal wedding draws over 22 million viewers in the United States

Americans seem to still love a fairy tale.

22.76 million Americans tuned in to watch Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding ceremony in the early morning hours on Friday, April 29, according to the Associated Press.

The viewership was spread out over 11 different networks. The Neilson Company's measurement was for the period of 6 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. ET, when the ceremony was taking place. The wedding was telecast on ABC, CBS, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, BBC America, CNN, E! Entertainment, Fox News Channel, MSNBC and TLC.

However, there was no estimate by the company of how many people watched the ceremony worldwide.

The Web also saw a surge in traffic from viewers wanting to watch the ceremony streaming live online. According to the wire service, ABCNews.com said its online traffic Friday was its highest since the 2008 presidential election. And, E! Online said its 23.6 million page views on Friday was its most ever. ABC is the parent company of OnTheRedCarpet.com.

The couple exchanged vows in front of 1,900 people, including fellow royals from around the world, pop stars and athletes.

Royal officials say Sarah Burton designed Middleton's wedding dress, a lacy gown with a plunging neckline. See photos of the dress and the ceremony here.

Prince William and Middleton will be known as the duke and duchess of Cambridge, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday.

Prince William's wedding is arguably one of the biggest events in Britain since the wedding of Diana and Prince Charles nearly 30 years ago.
