Lisa Rinna has expressed interest in taking over Regis Philbin's spot on "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly," opposite Kelly Ripa.
In a recent interview with the entertainment site PopEater, Rinna says she was up for Ripa's spot on the show ten years ago but thinks it would be interesting to turn the show into "LIVE! with Lisa & Kelly."
"I love that show. I love Regis, I love him. I love sitting there. You know I was up for that gig ten years ago," Rinna told PopEater. "You can't replace Regis, but I think it's actually smart to put a lady in there [with] Kelly. It would be fun to co-host with her, at least see what the chemistry would be like cause we know sometimes women get along, sometimes they don't."
Last month, Rinna was fired from Donald Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice." The former "Days of Our Lives" and "Melrose Place" actress was made the leader of her team for the episode and had lost a challenge to write a children's book after squabbling with contestants such as Star Jones.
Ripa is working on a television special for Philbin's departure in November. The project, helmed by her and husband Mark Consuelos' production company, will showcase highlights from the life and career of Philbin, who is 79 and has hosted the ABC daytime program in its various formats for some 25 years, the Hollywood Reporter said.
On April 10, the New York Post said Philbin was in talks with studios to develop a new talk show that contained more news coverage.
Philbin has not commented publicly on the report but Entertainment Weekly quoted Philbin's rep as saying the rumors were "untrue."
Philbin announced in January that he would leave "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly." Disney-ABC Television Group had said at the time that it would soon name a new person to replace him on the program, which has seen three different co-hosts.
Philbin took time off from "LIVE! with Regis & Kelly" last year to have a blood clot removed from his leg. He also had hip replacement surgery in December 2010 and triple heart bypass surgery in 2007.
Philbin began his television career in Los Angeles, working for KABC Television, OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company. He moved to New York in 1983 and co-hosted "The Morning Show" with Cyndy Garvey on local station WABC Television. Garvey was replaced by Kathie Lee Gifford in 1985 and the show became nationally syndicated in 1988.
Gifford left the series in 2000 and Philbin co-hosted it with guests until Kelly Ripa joined the program full-time in 2001.
