OTRC: Hines Ward: Police incident was a 'misunderstanding'

Hines Ward, Steelers wide receiver and two-time Super Bowl XL MVP, joins Kym Johnson, who returns for her ninth season on season 12 of 'Dancing with the Stars.'

Hines Ward, a "Dancing With The Stars" contestant, was detained at gunpoint by Los Angeles police officers early on Thursday, May 5, and says it was a "misunderstanding."

The Pittsburgh Steelers star and a female driver were stopped at a gas station near Los Angeles at 1:30 a.m. local time. Hines was not arrested.

Officials said she had reported the car they were in to be stolen when she could not find the vehicle after a valet had parked it and had forgotten to call the police back to cancel her report after it was eventually located.

"The incident in the news that involved me getting pulled over. I want everyone to know that this was a complete misunderstanding," Ward said in a message posted on his Facebook page. "The police were just doing their job. Apologies were made and it's now in the past. Moving forward...Hines."

His spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com earlier that "Hines was very cooperative and understanding. He is fine and it's over."

Police officers had said earlier that Ward was very cooperative during the whole incident.

Ward is partnered with Kym Johnson, who returns for her ninth season, on season 12 of "Dancing With The Stars."
