Prince William, Kate to visit California

LOS ANGELES

Royal officials said on Thursday that the new couple will be in California for three days, starting July 8, after their tour of Canada.

It is unknown what part of California they will visit. Officials said a detailed itinerary was expected at a later date.

This will be Prince William's first official trip to the U.S. and Middleton's first-ever visit to the country.

"I certainly hope they come soon and enjoy it and come to Hollywood," said Sherman Oaks resident Arlene Kardell. "I'm' sure they'll be out walking Hollywood Boulevard."

It's been a while since Southern Californians had a royal visit.

The prince's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, stopped in San Diego, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, San Francisco and elsewhere in 1983. During an earlier visit she even watched movies being made at Universal Studios.

William's father, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, were a big hit when they visited the San Francisco Bay area in 2005, mingling with the common folk as they sampled produce at farmers markets.

William's mother, Princess Diana, created a huge stir when she visited in the 1980s, charming people everywhere she went.

Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said he's confident his department can handle the visit.

"I can deal with everything from the president being here to Britney Spears to Lindsay Lohan," he said. "I can deal with the royals."
