The worker was identified as 23-year-old Douglas Odgers.
Authorities said Odgers was sitting in the rear of the ambulance when the driver swerved for unknown reasons and slammed into a support pole. Odgers later died at the hospital.
The driver had minor injuries but should recover. There were no patients in the ambulance at the time.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
