Marlee Matlin, the Oscar winning actress and one of the four remaining contestants on "Celebrity Apprentice," says she owes $50,000 in back taxes.

The other three remaining "Celebrity Apprentice" contestants are country singer John Rich, rapper Lil Jon and rocker Meat Loaf. Matlin was often praised by host Donald Trump and also appeared on his Comedy Central roast in March. Matlin says she is paying her back taxes from 2009, but like many Americans, suffered in the recession.

"I'm paying it back. I'm not shying away from it and I'm certainly not ashamed of it," Matlin told People magazine. "It doesn't mean I'm a bad person. It's reality. It's the reality that a lot of people in America are facing."

Matlin rose to fame in 1986 after winning a Best Actress Oscar for her work in "Children of a Lesser God," which also earned her the honor of being the only deaf actress and the youngest woman to win the Award - she was 21-years-old at the time.

In 1993, Matlin married Burbank police officer Kevin Grandalski in actor Henry Winkler's back yard - the "Happy Days" actor was responsible for discovering Matlin which led to her film debut. Matlin and Grandalski have four children together, Sarah Rose, 14, Brandon Joseph, 10, Tyler Daniel, 8, and Isabelle Jane, 7.

"Living modestly in a suburban neighborhood while trying to support four children through private school is not extravagant or living large," Matlin said. "My husband is a Los Angeles area police officer and between the two of us we have always made ends meet in the past - and we will in this circumstance as well."

Matlin plans on selling her home and moving with her family to a good public school district.

"I'm not broke. Like everybody else, I owe money," Matlin admit to People. "Transitioning out of a private school environment will certainly relieve some of the financial pressures but hopefully this will not compromise the kids."

Matlin has also won a Golden Globe Award, two Golden Globe nominations and four Emmy nominations. She has had recurring roles in "The West Wing," "The L Word," She has also appeared in shows like "Seinfeld," "The Outer Limits," "ER," "Desperate Housewives," "The Practice," "My Name Is Earl," "Nip/Tuck," and the sixth season of "Dancing With The Stars."

The actress dealt with drug addiction and a rocky relationship with actor William Hurt, which she addressed in her 2009 autobiography, "I'll Scream Later."
