OTRC: Maya Rudolph talks 'Bridesmaids,' comedy and friendship

Maya Rudolph talks to OnTheRedCarpet.com at the April 2011 premiere of the movie 'Bridesmaids.'

Maya Rudolph of "Saturday Night Live" stars as the bride in the female-driven comedy "Bridesmaids" and says the best part of making the film was "making each other laugh."

The plot centers around Annie (Kristen Wiig) and her experiences as the Maid of Honor in her friend Lillian's (Maya Rudolph) wedding.

"The most fun is making each other laugh and knowing that it's funny to you, because I really think that's the only way to do comedy," Rudolph told Rachel Smith of OnTheRedCarpet.com. "Then, if people laugh, that feels really good but we had such a good time making this movie."

Despite all the drama in the movie, Rudolph says the weddings she attends are usually more laid-back.

"I've got some really mellow friends, it's always been pretty cool," Rudolph told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "The whole nugget of the film is about this woman who's going through this really hard time in her life and then this friendship that's kind of changing and I think a lot of people can relate to that but then there's a lot of good stuff that comes with it."

The movie was written by Wiig and her friend Annie Mumolo, who, along with Rudolph are all members of The Groundlings improvisational comedy troupe. Paul Feig who created "Freaks and Geeks" directed the film and Judd Apatow of "Knocked Up" and "Superbad" fame is one of the producers.

Rudolph, 38, is the daughter of soul singer Minnie Riperton who sang "Lovin' You" and composer/songwriter Richard Rudolph. Before joining the cast of "Saturday Night Live" in 2000, Rudolph played keyboards and sang backup for the band The Rentals, which is fronted by Weezer's former bassist Matt Sharp.

The actress is married to director Paul Thomas Anderson ("There Will Be Blood," "Boogie Nights," "Magnolia," "Punch-Drunk Love") and the couple has two daughters, Pearl Minnie and Lucille. She is currently pregnant with her third child.

Rudolph has appeared in films like "Away We Go," "Grown Ups" and "MacGruber." She next appears in the comedy, "Friends with Kids" which also stars her "Bridesmaids" co-stars Jon Hamm and Kristen Wiig, along with Megan Fox.

"Bridesmaids" hit theaters on May 13. Watch a trailer below.
