State lawmakers are considering a bill that would make California the first state to ban restaurants from serving food and drinks in Styrofoam containers.

The bill's author is Sen. Alan Lowenthal of Long Beach, who says there are other biodegradable materials that could replace Styrofoam containers and they are not more expensive.

In California, 47 other cities already have similar bans in place.

If approved, the statewide ban would go into effect in 2014.
