Bakersfield student gets $100K scholarship

May 17, 2011 12:00:00 AM PDT
A Bakersfield student received a $100,000 scholarship from a Minneapolis-based engineering company on Tuesday.

Octavio Viramontes immigrated to California from Mexico when he was 9 years old.

His parents work in the fields picking grapes and for years Viramontes struggled with English. But he was able to overcome his circumstances.

Viramontes is expected to graduate this year with a 5.0 GPA, and he has been accepted into Harvard.

"Now I can go to Harvard College and worry about my academics and not about my financial status," said Viramontes.

Viramontes hasn't decided on a major, but he's considering engineering.
