CDC uses zombies to raise disaster awareness

LOS ANGELES

This is definitely a quirky campaign by the CDC, but it has a serious side. They really want people to have an emergency kit and an emergency plan in place no matter what the disaster might be -- even a zombie invasion.

Are you prepared for a zombie invasion? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention think you should be.

Actually they want you to be ready for any disaster whether it be bioterrorism, salmonella, an earthquake, and yes, even zombies.

What started out as the stuff of Hollywood fiction on a CDC blog has really created an Internet frenzy. The CDC might get a thousand hits in a week. Now it's getting 30,000 a day, really bringing attention to the importance of disaster preparedness -- which is usually not a very thrilling subject.

The CDC website calls the campaign Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse.

It is the brainchild of a CDC official who is also a fan of zombie movies.

Your "zombie apocalypse emergency kit" should include:

  • Water
  • Food
  • Medications
  • First-aid supplies
  • Important documents
  • Change of clothes
  • Blankets
  • Batteries
  • And more

Obviously zombies are not really something to worry about. But just in case, the CDC says if zombies did roam the streets, they would immediately conduct an investigation.

You have to admit zombies do grab your attention. Now it's time to do something about being prepared for the worst, even if there is no such thing as the living dead.
