Penelope Cruz has worked with a slew of major actors, but her newest co-star Johnny Depp still managed to impress her on the set of "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."
"The work ethic that he has, he brings it to the movie set and that affects the whole movie, that affects the whole crew," Cruz said in an interview provided by Disney Studios. "He creates this beautiful group, family of people, working in the same direction and everybody wants to make him happy."
Cruz joined the cast in the film's fourth installment and gushed that her talented co-star exceeded all preconceptions.
"He's just better and better every day and when I met him, one of the things that I was most surprised about was how humble he is," Cruz continued. "He's so kind to everyone and so sweet and he has a brilliant, brilliant mind. Really smart, really clever. Fast, really funny, he's one of the funniest people I know. And a really big heart. And you know, when you work with someone like that, not everybody's like that, he's a very unique human being."
In the film, Johnny Depp is back to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and in this installment, Jack crosses paths with Angelica (Cruz), a woman who he slighted in the past and they agree to help each other to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, a ship belonging to the most dangerous pirate alive, Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack is not sure who to worry about more - Blackbeard or Angelica.
"She is a pirate and she has the pirate mind- tricky, manipulative, and dangerous when she has to be," Cruz said of her character Angelica. "She loves games, but she has a good heart. Her motivation is always a good one because she has an interesting mixture of what happens when you are the daughter of the most dangerous pirate of all time - Blackbeard, but you have a religious background and very strong values and your first motivation is saving your father's soul. So she's full of contradictions and I think that's what makes the character so interesting."
The Spanish actress was raised Roman Catholic, so she can probably relate to her character's dilemma. Cruz has been romantically linked to her "Vanilla Sky" co-star Tom Cruise and her "Sahara" co-star Matthew McConaughey. The actress began dating her "Vicky Cristina" co-star Javier Bardem in 2007 and they got married in 2010. They welcomed their first child, son Leo Encinas Bardem in January.
