Johnny Depp is back to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and in the fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and seems overjoyed to continue playing the flamboyant pirate.

"The idea of doing a fourth one after 'Pirates 3,' somewhere in the back of your head you go, 'I sure hope so.' You always sort of expect that somebody down the road would say 'So, I have this idea for a scenario' and that's exactly what happened," Depp said in an interview provided by Disney Studios. "I was very happy."

In the film, Jack crosses paths with Angelica (Cruz), a woman who he slighted in the past and they agree to help each other to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.

"The main quest is the Fountain of Youth and there are several areas of outside interest," Depp said in an interview provided by Disney Studios. "There's Kind George of England, there's the Spanish and there's the pirates - Blackbeard. ...It's something they talked about early on when they were talking sequels, they were talking about the Fountain of Youth and Ponce de Leon and stuff and I never quite saw how they were gonna pull it off, but they certainly did!"

Cruz's character eventually forces Jack aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge, a ship belonging to the most dangerous pirate alive, Blackbeard (Ian McShane), who happens to be her father.

"Penelope plays Angelica, who is someone that Jack had contact with in the years past and it doesn't feel like it ended up all that well, it might have ended on a sour note. Turns out Penelope is the daughter of Blackbeard and he's accepted her into the fold and she is the love of his life and so when Jack is hauled into Blackbeard's world, it makes it just that much harder to get through. She has another agenda."

Blackbeard proves to be Jack's scariest opponent in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and Depp himself seems surprised by the cruelty of the character.

"The beauty of the character of Blackbeard is on the surface, he seems or appears to be a rational man but the more you get to know him, he's a stone-cold killer without an ounce of heart, not a thing in him" Depp said of his new enemy. "He would screw over anyone and everyone to get to his objective, that's one of the things that makes him so dangerous. Blackbeard was the fiercest of them all, he was the guy who would stop at nothing and was totally unpredictable and I don't think there's a better choice to play him than Ian McShane."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" also stars Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who helped inspire the character of Sparrow, He plays the pirate's father, Captain Teague.

Depp, 47, and girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, 38, have an 11-year-old daughter, Lily-Rose, who will turn and 9-year-old son, Jack.

Depp is gearing up to play Tonto in a film adaptation of "The Lone Ranger." It was announced this week that "The Social Network" actor Armie Hammer will star as the Lone Ranger.
