The fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, "On Stranger Tides," is proving that Jack Sparrow still has fight left for the box office crown.

The sequel, which also stars Penelope Cruz, earned an estimated $90 million domestically to take first place for the weekend, according to the Associated Press. The film also took a record international haul of $256.3 million. The international sum boosts its worldwide total to $346.4 million, the fourth largest global opening.

In the film, Jack crosses paths with Angelica (Cruz), a woman who he slighted in the past and they agree to help each other to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.

The last film in the "Pirates" franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" opened with $114.7 million during Memorial Day weekend in 2007.

"The idea of doing a fourth one after 'Pirates 3,' somewhere in the back of your head you go, 'I sure hope so.' You always sort of expect that somebody down the road would say 'So, I have this idea for a scenario' and that's exactly what happened," Depp said in an interview provided by Disney Studios. "I was very happy."

"Bridesmaids" held its second place position from last weekend and earned an additional $21 million to raise its two week sum of $58.9 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Thor" slipped to third place with an estimated $15 million take for the weekend. The film, based off the Marvel comic hero with the same name, stars Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Hopkins. It has earned $145.4 million for its total domestic box office run.

"Fast Five" landed in fourth place for the weekend as it edges closer to the $200 million mark. The movie earned $10.2 million dollar take for the weekend, which raised its domestic sum to $185.8 million, according to the industry paper.

"Rio" continues to bring in solid box office numbers. The animated film featuring the voice of Anne Hathaway and "The Social Network" star Jesse Eisenberg, finished in fifth place for the weekend with $4.7 million added to its domestic total of $131.6 million.
