Ventura officer in fatal shooting identified

VENTURA, Calif.

Ventura Police were called to a report of a physical domestic violence abuse in incident on Leighton Drive at about 10:30 p.m. Friday, according to the department.

Ventura Police Officer Eric Jackson, an officer with eight and a half years of experience in law enforcement, arrived at the scene and found a male suspect screaming. The suspect produced a knife and assumed an aggressive stance against the officer, according to police.

The suspect did not comply with the Jackson's orders and rushed the officer with knife in hand, coming very close to Jackson, according to police.

Jackson, in fear for his life, fired his service weapons several times, according to the department.

The suspect, 44-year-old Ventura resident Mario Lopez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officer Jackson was placed on administrative leave, common practice following officer-involved shootings, according to the Ventura Police Dept.
