Amy Adams has officially signed on to join the cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's controversial new movie, formerly known as "The Master," Adams' spokesperson confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com.

The actress will play the wife of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character, Lancaster Dodd, a charismatic intellectual who returns shaken from World War II to form a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in the 1950s.

According to Variety, the "tenets of the faith closely mirror those of Scientology."

Joaquin Phoenix has been cast as Dodd's right-hand man, Freddie Sutton, and "Friday Night Lights" actor Jesse Plemons is set to play Dodd's son.

Adams and Seymour Hoffman previously starred in the religious film "Doubt," which earned the two and co-stars Meryl Streep and Viola Davis Oscar nominations.

The Weinstein Company acquired rights to the untitled movie last month in a bidding war. Thomas Anderson has been nominated for five Oscars for "There Will Be Blood," "Magnolia" and "Boogie Nights."

Adams earned her third Oscar nomination last year for her role in "The Fighter." The actress first appeared in the beauty queen comedy "Drop Dead Gorgeous." She has since starred in films like "Enchanted," "Sunshine Cleaning" and "Julie & Julia."

The actress will next appear opposite Jason Segel in "The Muppets," which is slated for release on Nov. 23, 2011. She will also play Lois Lane in the 2012 Superman re-launch, "Man of Steel," opposite "The Social Network" actor Henry Cavill.
