Ventura County residents prepare for fire season

VENTURA

Ventura fire officials are putting out the word. They say unless someone lives on the coast, fire season began Thursday and residents need defensible space around their home.

"Now everybody's got to look at it individually," said Capt. Ron Oatman from Ventura County Fire. "Do you live on a one-way road, a dead end canyon? Do you have horses, handicapped people, elderly, stuff that's going to slow you down? So everybody's got to look their own individual wildfire action plan and see what's going to work for them.''

Two things which definitely work are clearing flammable debris from the roof, as well as clearing grass and brush around the home. Fire officials recommend at least 100-feet of clearance.
