Maria Shriver reportedly "cried" and was "so strong" after she was told husband Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a son out of wedlock, the boy's mother and the actor's alleged mistress, Mildred Baena, told Hello! magazine.
Shriver, 55, and Schwarzenegger, 63, have not commented on the report, which came weeks after the former California governor admitted to his extramarital affair, but has not identified Baena by name, following a Los Angeles Times article that was posted in mid-May.
Days earlier, he and Shriver announced they were separating after 25 years of marriage. The two are parents to four children, who are between the ages of 21 to 13. The youngest, Christopher, is the same age as Baena's son.
Baena, 50, retired in January after working as couple's housekeeper for some 20 years, ABC News had said. She and her boy have been in hiding since news of the affair broke. The two appear in a photo published in Hello! magazine, which is based in London.
Her attorney confirmed in a statement that Baena spoke on the record to Hello! magazine "in order to set the record straight once and for all."
Baena told the publication that she brought the boy to the home of Schwarzenegger and Shriver in the summer of 2010.
"Until then, he hadn't been around very much," Baena said. "After that, people in the house started whispering about how much they looked like each other. Maria would ask if I needed to talk to her, and I kept saying no."
She said Shriver asked her "point blank" if her boy was Schwarzenegger's son.
"I just broke down," Baena told Hello!. "I dropped to my knees and I was crying, saying that yes he was and I was so sorry. She was so strong. She cried with me and told me to get off my knees. We held each other and I told her it wasn't Arnie's fault, that it takes two."
"Since I was retiring soon, I said I would pack and leave right away," Baena added. "But she said to stay until after the holidays."
Baena said she never told Schwarzenegger that her son was his child. The boy, she said, responded with "Cool!" when he was told of the news.
It has been reported that Shriver has hired a divorce attorney, although she has not confirmed this.
He's a good man and I know he's suffering too," Baena told Hello!. "He loves Maria. I hope with time they work things out."
