Ontario BMW union employees protest layoffs

ONTARIO, Calif.

Nearly 100 BMW employees and their families held a rally Thursday outside the automaker's distribution center in Ontario. And they got support from other teamster members in Southern California.

The teamsters say BMW has told them they'll be dismissed this summer and replaced with non-union workers. They've worked at the warehouse for years.

"They're going to stay in this building," said Teamsters Local 495 member Bob Lennox. "A day after they let these people go they will bring in lowly paid and under-skilled workers to run the operation."

BMW released a statement.

"The business in Ontario is not going anywhere. We want to provide our dealers and customers with excellent service. We are working with the teamsters union to make this an orderly and smooth transition."
